Key Points on Population Growth

Updated 19 March, 2016

  • The main cause of our population increase, by far, has been mass migration.
  • Since 2000, 85% of our population growth has been due to immigration[1].
  • Net migration has averaged 242,000 over the past ten years and currently stands at 323,000 (year ending September 2015).
  • If net migration continues at this level the population will increase by around 500,000 a year - the equivalent of a new city the size of Liverpool every year. This is unsustainable.[2]
  • Over 90% of international migrants to the UK go to England. England is nearly twice as crowded as Germany and 3.5 times as crowded as France.
  • The UK Population is currently estimated at around 65 million. According to the official population projections it will grow by nearly eight million over the next fifteen years if net migration remains at 265,000 a year. 75% of this increase would be down to future migrants and their children.
  • By 2040 all our population growth will be the result of immigration. This is because the UK birth rate, currently at 1.83 is below the replacement rate of 2.1
